Chapter 5

God sent Elijah to stay and dine with a widow and her son during a drought. The son fell ill and died. Elijah prayed over him and raised him from the dead.

“Then he stretched himself upon the child three times and cried to the Lord, “O Lord my God, let this child’s life come into him again.” And the Lord listened to the voice of Elijah. And the life of the child came into him again, and he revived. And Elijah took the child and brought him down from the upper chamber into the house and delivered him to his mother. And Elijah said, “See, your son lives.” And the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in your mouth is truth.””1 Kings 17:21-24.

“Has it not been told my lord what I did when Jezebel killed the prophets of the Lord, how I hid a hundred men of the Lord’s prophets by fifties in a cave and fed them with bread and water? And now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, “Behold, Elijah is here”’; and he will kill me.” And Elijah said, “As the Lord of hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him today.” So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him. And Ahab went to meet Elijah.” 1 Kings 18:13-16.

Elijah challenged Ahab to bring the prophets of baal to Mount Carmel. He asked for two bulls to be placed on wood to be sacrificed as offerings, one to baal, the other to Yahweh, the God of Israel. The true God would listen to the prayers and light the sacrifice. The prophets of baal prayed for hours, but nothing happened. Elijah prayed to the God of Israel, and almost immediately fire fell from heaven and consumed the sacrifice.

“And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces and said, “The Lord, he is God; the Lord, he is God.” 40 And Elijah said to them, “Seize the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape.” And they seized them. And Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon and slaughtered them there.” 1 Kings 18:39-40.

“Then Elijah took his cloak and rolled it up and struck the water, and the water was parted to the one side and to the other, till the two of them could go over on dry ground. When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you.” And Elisha said, “Please let there be a double portion of your spirit on me.”” 2 Kings 2:8-9.

“So he departed from there and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen in front of him, and he was with the twelfth. Elijah passed by him and cast his cloak upon him. And he left the oxen and ran after Elijah and said, “Let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you.” And he said to him, “Go back again, for what have I done to you?” And he returned from following him and took the yoke of oxen and sacrificed them and boiled their flesh with the yokes of the oxen and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he arose and went after Elijah and assisted him.” 1 Kings 19:19-21.

“And as they still went on and talked, behold, chariots of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. ¹² And Elisha saw it and he cried, “My father, my father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!” And he saw him no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them in two pieces.” 2 Kings 2:11-12.

Peter, James, and John fell asleep as Jesus went alone to pray at the top of Mount Tabor. When they woke up Jesus appeared to be different, His face and clothes were dazzling bright, and alongside with him were Moses and Elijah.  Jesus did not actually change. They eyes of the disciples opened when the scales fell off and they saw the divine Jesus in His true glory.

“And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, my Chosen One; listen to him!”” Luke 9:35.
